Humanitarian Highlight 8/20/20: Helping Humanity
Hello everyone, Happy Thursday and Happy #HumanitarianHighlight Day! Each week we shine the light on some awesome credit unions who help their communities. We love looking through our social media feeds and seeing so many credit unions doing good deeds, and helping those in need, especially during these rocky times. We want to thank all the following CUs for doing their part to help humanity! Please send us any inspiring stories from credit unions to be featured!
As part of the industry-wide Credit Unions Care Challenge, GTE Financial FCU employees received $25 gift cards to make a charitable donation of their choice. For participating, they received matching funds of $2.3 billion which they donated to the St. Vincent de Paul CARES to fight homelessness.
Wheelhouse awarded five scholarships of $1,000 to college-bound students who demonstrated leadership, public service, and a desire to make a sustainable difference in their communities. Congratulations to these five lucky students!
The San Diego County Credit Union and partners collected school supplies for students who are experiencing homelessness. Keep up the generous gestures, SDCCU!
Along with the Dairy Queens of Tyler, Texas, Kelly Community FCU raised $5,000 as part of their “Miracle Mondays in May” and donated the money to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
In light of the difficulty many CU members are facing at this time, DFCU awarded a member with a $500 COVID-19 relief grant. “Even before COVID-19, you have been there for us over the years,” said Margarita Melendez, winner of the grant. You are appreciated, DFCU!
Hanscom FCU donated a total of $4,728 to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year the event had to go fully virtual, and Hanscom employees walked, ran, and biked toward a goal of 2,020 miles as part of their “Hope from Home.” Amazing job, HFCU!
As part of the United Way Day of Action, Family Savings CU staff volunteered at the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center. Together, they worked on some landscaping and yard work.

"Over the past 23 years, credit unions have raised an incredible $185 million. Credit unions raise funds by engaging their communities, members, and especially employees. This has allowed them to make an immense impact on millions of children every single year. 100% of the donations go directly to the children’s hospital in your community." CU4Kids Miracle Jeans Day
Let us all help make a difference to help end childhood illness!
