MBL Symposium Recap
Community engagement is arguably one of the most important characteristics of a credit union. Helping small businesses and being in touch with your members is what builds great relationships and can help a community thrive. These topics, as well as many others were discussed recently at the 2018 MBL Symposium, whose tagline was “Helping Businesses Help People.” The event took place in Las Vegas and as we all know, it is a place with absolutely no shortage of things to do or see. From the numerous shows, residencies, and hotel attractions, to simply walking down the strip itself, there is something for everybody. It boasts 15 of the top 25 hotels in the world and around 15,000 miles of neon tubing. What better place to hold a three day long conference? While Oak Tree didn’t attend this year, we’d like to share with you some of the things that went down.
Attendees from credit unions and financial institutions around the nation were able to receive first-hand insight from business lending experts as well as small business owners. A panel discussion was held and provided a different perspective as to why credit unions should diversify their lending portfolios. The discussion presented specific examples to refer to for helping out people in communities, and owners of small businesses. Many credit union conferences lack a viewpoint that differs from that of a professional, so it was something unique.
An alternative perspective is always good, but getting information from an expert with proven experience can be just as beneficial. The MBL Symposium featured several speakers from successful credit unions who shared their experiences and tactics that have worked for them during their careers. The topics in their sessions ranged from subjects such as why credit unions should get involved in small business lending, how things get done, and why working with the community benefits everybody. Being able to hear from the speakers after having discussions with small business owners provided contrast and even more ideas for attendees to take home.
While there were plenty of opportunities for networking and leisure prior to the final day of the symposium, a fun and unique experience was provided for attendees. In an attempt to blend work and pleasure, the final two sessions were held at the popular TOPGOLF attraction, where guests could network while eating, drinking and playing golf in a welcoming environment. The idea was a great way to allow guests to experience some of what Las Vegas has to offer, as well as provide some final closing remarks to wrap everything up.
The 2018 MBL Symposium gave everybody who attended excellent insight into the world of business lending. It was designed to show credit unions and other financial institutions the benefits of working with community members and how these relationships can be achieved. The wealth of knowledge and information being passed around over the course of three days was enough to be able to contribute to new ideas and growth at credit unions across the nation.
