Run-Down of NCUMA's 2017 Summer Conference
Summer is a great time for travel and outdoor activities. It is also when many credit union leagues and trade associations host their annual events, such as the National Credit Union Management Association (NCUMA) Summer Conference. The Summer Conference combines exciting summer activities with educational training sessions for credit union executives. This year, the conference was held in Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman, a British Territory south of Cuba. As the attendees head home or enjoy their extended stay on the island, here is a summary of what they learned.
The conference was a five-day event that started with an NCUA update given by Alan Burch. The following days of the conference, attendees learned what it means to be a “mobile-first” credit union and how to become one, banking technology, trends in both the economy, and politics that affect credit unions. The conference also discussed megatrends in financial services such as fintech companies, and the demand from consumers for “frictionless financial services.”
Mixed in with all of the educational sessions, attendees were given the option to participate in networking activities throughout the conference. These included snorkeling with stingrays, a sunset sail, and the NCUMA golf tournament.
The Summer Conference gave multiple sessions for credit unions to prepare for the future. The conference discussed the latest technology for credit unions, current regulations and any that may be on the horizon, as well as serving and working with new generations. It even included a session just for executives on how to plan for the next 5 years.
